I'm Simone Elias, a writer. My first book, Old Films, Young Eyes: A Teenage Take on Hollywood's Golden Age, is all about classic Hollywood's relevance in the modern era and how these unknown gems predicted attitudes towards modern struggles such as abortion, divorce, racism, sexual relations, and women's rights. It came out November 15, 2024 from McFarland and was covered in the San Francisco Chronicle, the Forward, FOX News, and more.
I'm a cultural critic at heart--a lot of my work focuses on bridging history and vintage aesthetics to modern sociological issues, making the past alive again. I love exploring multifaceted female characters in writing (and analyzing them, like on my series Girlhood on Film). The San Francisco Chronicle called me "culturally omnivorous" and I take that approach to Girlhood on Film, bridging Czech New Wave with Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Freudian terminology with Joanne Woodward.
I'm currently in development with a wide array of projects bridging Gen Z girlhood, classic film, psychiatric history, and Jewish identity. And quite frankly, I hate summarizing my existence into three paragraphs, so send me an email instead:
